1st Grade Weekly Newsletter

Math- We will be finding differences among various shapes and reviewing/taking our test on “Topic 14.” Next, we will be starting “Topic 15- Equal Shares Of Circles and Rectangles. We will be determining whether shapes are divided into equal shares, dividing shapes into 2 and 4 equal shares and using words to describe those shares, and understanding that more equal shares of the same whole create smaller shares.

Reading- We will be reading and responding to the simple stories.

Phonics- We will be reviewing identifying “long and short vowel sounds.”

Grammar- We will be reviewing what nouns, verbs, and adjectives are.

Writing- We will be continuing to focus on writing our letters correctly.

Listening- We will be finishing our next author study, “Cynthia Rylant” who wrote the “Henry and Mudge” books.

Social Studies- We will be continuing our next unit- “Our Country/The World.”

Science- We will be continuing our next unit- “Space.”

Reminders:
•There will be a UNIT 5 Sight Words Test this week, starting on Monday,
June 6, 2022.

• The students will be having a Math Test on Topic 14 on Tuesday, June 7, 2021.

Next, we will begin “Topic 13- Time and Money,” where we will learning the values of the (penny, nickel, dime, quarter) and telling how much a group of coins is worth.

Reading- We will be continuing our fifth reading series reading the story My Autumn Book. This story will help us learn our reading skills: Main Idea, Theme, and our reading genre: Fiction text.

1st Grade Weekly Newsletter

Math- We will be adding 2 two-digit numbers, solving addition problems using different strategies, and modeling/ solving problems by drawing picture and writing an equation. Next, we will be continuing “Topic 11- Use Models and Strategies To Subtract Tens,” where we will be using models to subtract tens.

Reading- We will be starting our fifth (last) reading series reading the story Every Season. This story will help us learn our reading skills: Main Idea, describing connections, and our reading genre: Informational text.
This Week’s Sight Words- about, buy, people, would, write

Phonics- We will be identifying the sound “Long o: oa, ow, oe” found in words and “Consonant Blends and Trigraphs” sounds found in words.

Grammar- We will be identifying what “adverbs” are.

Listening- We will be reading “Easter” books.

Writing- We will continue to focus on writing our letters correctly. We also will be continuing to learn about the “writing process.”

Religion- We will be learning about Chapter 21- “The Three Days.” Also, we will be learning and participating in the “Stations of the Cross.”

Science- We will be continuing to learn about “Light” and examining how goats help new trees grow.

Social Studies- We will be finishing up researching the different community helpers and their jobs in the community.

Reminders:
• This Friday, the students will be tested on their ten spelling words and sight words.

• Our Specials Are: Monday- Spanish; Tuesday- Art; Wednesday- STREAM and Gym; Thursday-Music; Friday- Mass and Technology.

Homework Assignments

• Please practice the sight words from Unit 4. The students will be assessed on all of them starting on, April 25, 2022.

5. Additional School Work: Do “I-Ready” Math for 15 minutes.

Wednesday:
1. Math- Math Workbook 10-9
2. Phonics- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Consonant Blends/Trigraphs)
3. Spelling- Pick five spelling words, and write one sentence for each of the five words. (Continuing from now on, I would like the students to put the (5) spelling words in meaningful sentences. This will help the students develop better writing skills. For example: I see a giant bear at the zoo. Instead of I see a giant bear. )
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words.
5. Additional School Work: Do “I-Ready” ELA for 15 minutes.

Thursday:
1. Math- Math Workbook 11-1
2. Grammar- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Adverbs)
3. Spelling- Practice the spelling words, for a test tomorrow.
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words, to be assessed tomorrow.

Math- We will be using a hundred chart to add tens and ones, using a number line to solve addition problems, solving addition problems by using blocks or drawings, and making a ten to help solve addition problems.

Reading- We will be finishing our fourth reading series.
This Week’s Sight Words- may, give, right, other, number

Phonics- We will be identifying “adding endings –ed/-ing” found in words and “vowel team ie” found in words.

Listening- We will be starting to read a “Junie B. Jones” book by Barbara Park.

Science- We will be starting our next unit, “Light.”

Social Studies- We will be researching the different community helpers (doctor and teacher) and their jobs in the community.

Religion- We will be learning and participating in the “Stations of the Cross.”

• The students will also be having their Science Test on Light on Tuesday,
