1st Grade Weekly Newsletter

Math- We will be solving words problems by drawing pictures and writing equations, reviewing, and taking a test on “Topic 2.”

Reading- We will be finishing our first reading series.
This Week’s Sight Words- go, me, for, here, where

Phonics- We will be continuing to review our letters along with their sounds, which are: “v, y, z, qu” and review “all short vowels”.

Grammar- We will be reviewing what a “simple sentence” is.

Listening- We will be reading “Halloween books.”

Writing- We will be continuing to focus on writing our numbers and letters correctly.

Religion- We will be learning about Saints, in honor of “All Saint’s Day.”

Science- We will be dissecting a pumpkin and identifying the life-cycle of a pumpkin.

Reminders:
• This Friday, the students will be tested on their eight spelling words and sight words.

• The students will be having a Math test “TOPIC 2” on Thursday, October 28, 2021.
Please review the completed work that was sent home, which we have already learned (Homework and Class Work).

• Our Specials Are: Monday- Gym #1; Tuesday- Art;
Wednesday- STREAM and Gym #2; Thursday-Music; Friday- Mass and Technology.

Math- We will be using the same addends to write two different equations with the same sum, counting back to solve subtraction problems, and using addition facts to 10 to solve subtraction problems.

Reading- We will be starting our reading series reading the story Making a Map. This story will help us learn our reading skills: Main Idea and Predictions and our reading genre: Procedural Text.

Phonics- We will be continuing to review our letters along with their sounds, which are: “r, w, j, k” and “short vowel u”.

Handwriting- We will be reviewing how to correctly write the numbers 1-10.

Grammar- We will be reviewing what “nouns, verbs, and adjectives” are.

Listening- We will be reading “Fall books.”

Writing- We will be continuing to learn about how to be better writers in “Writers Workshop.”

Religion- We will be learning about Chapter 4- “Jesus Works Among The People.”

Science- We will be learning signs of autumn and we will be taking a “Nature Walk.”

Social Studies- We will be comparing and contrasting schools now and years ago and comparing and contrasting schools around the world. Also, we will continue our yearlong Unit on “Social Justice.” This week we will be focusing on “Family.”

Math- We will be using doubles to solve problems, solving problems using near doubles facts, and using a ten-frame to solve addition facts with 5 and 10.

Reading- We will be starting our reading series reading the story Garden Party and Click, Clack, Click!. This story will help us learn our reading skill: Visual Details and our reading genre: Realistic Fiction.

Phonics- We will be continuing to review our letters along with their sounds, which are: “d, l, h” and “short vowel e”.

Handwriting- We will be reviewing how to correctly write the numbers 1-10.

Also, we will begin our yearlong Unit on “Social Justice.” This week we will be focusing on “Solidarity.”

Science- We will be identifying the different animal coverings and identifying the basic needs of animals.

Math- We will be constructing math arguments in order to solve addition and subtraction problems, reviewing, and taking the test on Topic 1. Next, we will begin
“Topic 2- Fluently Add and Subtract Within 10,” adding by counting on from a number.

Reading- We will be starting our reading series reading the story Look Both Ways. This story will help us learn our reading skill: Reading Comprehension and our reading genre: informational text.

Phonics- We will be reviewing our first set of letters along with their sounds, which are: “f, b, g” and “short vowel o”.

Math- We will be solving subtraction problems that involve comparing to find how many more objects are in one group than another group, solving subtraction problems that involve comparing to find how many fewer objects are in one group than another group, solving addition problems by finding a missing addend, solving problems involving putting together or taking apart, and constructing math arguments in order to solve addition and subtraction problems.

Reading- We will be starting our reading series reading the story Henry On Wheels. This story will help us learn our reading skill: Setting and our reading genre: realistic fiction.

Phonics- We will be continuing to review another set of letters along with their sounds, which are: “c, p, n” and “short vowel i”.

Handwriting- We will begin by reviewing vertical lines, forward/backward circle lines, and how to make slant lines. This will help the students in making correct letter formation.

Listening- We will be starting our first “Author Study” by Miriam Cohen.

Religion- We will be learning about Chapter 2- “We Believe in the Blessed Trinity.”

Science- We will begin our first unit on “Animals,” learning how to categorize animals according to their habitats. We will also compare and contrast animals according to size, shape, and other characteristics.

Social Studies We will start off with our first unit “School Days.” The children will be discussing why rules are important to have in a classroom and what happens during their school days in their classroom.

Math- We will be starting our first chapter “Solve Addition and Subtraction Problems to 10.” We will solve problems involving situations of adding one part to another part, solving addition problems involving situations of putting two parts together, solving addition word problems by breaking apart a total number of objects, solving subtraction problems involving taking from a group, and solving subtraction problems that involve comparing to find how many more objects are in one group than another group.

Reading- We will be starting our reading series reading the story The Blackout. This story will help us learn our reading skill: Characters and our reading genre: realistic fiction.
