1st Grade Weekly Newsletter
Math- We will be showing groups of 10 with connecting cubes, grouping tens to solve problems, counting tens and ones to find a two-digit number, and using drawings to solve problems with tens and ones.
Reading- We will be starting our fourth reading series reading the story Through Georgia’s Eyes. This story will help us learn our reading skills: Main Idea, describing connections, and our reading genre: Biography text.
This Week’s Sight Words- always, found, new, please, thank
Phonics- We will be identifying the sound the “r-controlled ar” found in words and “inflectional ending –es and plurals –es” final sound found in words.
Grammar- We will be identifying what “action verbs” are.
Listening- We will be starting our next author study on “Steven Kellogg.”
Writing- We will continue to focus on writing our letters correctly. We also will be continuing to learn about the “writing process.”
Science- We will be starting our next unit, “Sound,” learning about different kinds of sounds we hear inside/outside and the sounds different kinds of objects make.
Social Studies- We will be learning about the lives of the two Presidents: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
Religion- We will be learning about Chapter 20- “Lent” and what is “Ash Wednesday.” Also, we will be learning about the “Stations of the Cross.”
Reminders:
• This Friday, the students will be tested on their ten spelling words and sight words.
• The students will be given an oral Religion Test on the two prayers (Grace BEFORE Meals and Grace AFTER Meals) throughout the week February 22, 2021.
• The students will be having their next Social Studies Test on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 (review the paper that was sent home).
• The students will be having a Math Test on Topic 8 on Thursday, March 4, 2021. Please review the completed work that was sent home, which we have already learned (Homework and Class Work).
• Our Specials Are: Monday- Gym; Tuesday- Technology; Wednesday- Spanish and Stream; Thursday-Music; Friday- Art.

5. Additional School Work: Read for 15 minutes and record it on your Reading Log AND work on “i-ready” for 15 minutes (ELA).
Tuesday:
1. Math- Math Workbook 8-3
2. Phonics- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- r- Controlled Vowel ar)
3. Spelling- Write spelling words (6-10) two times each.
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words.
5. Additional School Work: Read for 15 minutes and record it on your Reading Log AND work on “i-ready” for 15 minutes (MATH).
Wednesday:
1. Math- Math Workbook 8-4
2. Phonics- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Inflectional Ending –es/Plural Ending -es)
3. Spelling- Pick five spelling words, and write one sentence for each of the five words. (Starting from now on, I would like the students to put the (5) spelling words in meaningful sentences. This will help the students develop better writing skills. For example: I see a giant bear at the zoo. Instead of I see a giant bear. )
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words.
5. Additional School Work: Read for 15 minutes and record it on your Reading Log AND work on “Freckle” for 15 minutes (ELA).
Thursday:
1. Math- Math Workbook 8-5
2. Phonics- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Action Verbs)
3. Spelling- Practice the spelling words, for a test tomorrow.
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words, to be assessed tomorrow.
5. Additional School Work: Read for 15 minutes and record it on your Reading Log AND work on “Freckle” for 15 minutes (MATH).
