1st Grade Weekly Newsletter

Math- We will be reviewing and taking our test on “Topic 8.” We will then begin “Topic 9- Comparing Two-Digit Numbers,” where we will find numbers that are more or less than a given number and using a hundred chart to find 1 more/1 less/10 more/10 less.

Reading- We will be continuing our fourth reading series reading the story Before The Railroad Came. This story will help us learn our reading skills: Main Idea, Make Connections, and our reading genre: Historical Fiction.
This Week’s Sight Words- away, light, never, our, pretty

Phonics- We will be identifying “comparative endings: -er/-est” found in words and “trigraph -dge” found in words.

Grammar- We will be identifying what “verbs” are.

Listening- We will be starting our next author study on “Steven Kellogg.”

Writing- We will continue to focus on writing our letters correctly. We also will be continuing to learn about the “writing process.”

Science- We will be continuing our next unit, “Sound.”

Social Studies- We will be starting our next chapter “Communities,” where we will be learning about the people and places we see in our communities.

Religion- We will be learning about Chapter 17- “The Church Welcomes New Members” and learning about the “Stations of the Cross.”

Reminders:
• This Friday, the students will be tested on their ten spelling words and sight words.

• The students will be having a Math Test on Topic 8 on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. Please review the completed work that was sent home, which we have already learned (Homework and Class Work).

• The students will be having their next Social Studies Test on Thursday, March 10, 2022 (review the paper that was sent home).

• Our Specials Are: Monday- Spanish; Tuesday- Art; Wednesday- STREAM and Gym; Thursday-Music; Friday- Mass and Technology.

Homework Assignments

Monday:
1. Math- Review Sheet and study for the test tomorrow.
Please keep the “Review Sheet” at home for review.
2. Phonics- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Comparative Endings –er/-est)
3. Spelling- Write spelling words (1-5) two times each.
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words.
5. Additional School Work: Do MobyMax ELA/Math for 15 minutes.

Tuesday:
1. Math- No Math Homework!
2. Phonics- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Comparative Endings –er/-est)
3. Spelling- Write spelling words (6-10) two times each.
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words.
5. Additional School Work: Do MobyMax ELA/Math for 15 minutes.

Wednesday:
1. Math- Math Workbook 9-1
2. Phonics- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Trigraph -dge)
3. Spelling- Pick five spelling words, and write one sentence for each of the five words. (Continuing
from now on, I would like the students to put the (5) spelling words in meaningful sentences. This
will help the students develop better writing skills. For example: I see a giant bear at the zoo.
Instead of I see a giant bear. )
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words.
5. Additional School Work: Do MobyMax ELA/Math for 15 minutes.

Thursday:
1. Math- Math Workbook 9-2
2. Grammar- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Verbs)
3. Spelling- Practice the spelling words, for a test tomorrow.
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words, to be assessed tomorrow.
5. Additional School Work: Do MobyMax ELA/Math for 15 minutes.
