1st Grade Weekly Newsletter

Math- We will be reviewing and taking our test on “Topic 11.” We will then begin “Topic 12- Measure Lengths,” where we will be ordering objects by length and indirectly comparing objects by length.

Reading- We will be continuing our fifth reading series reading the story In Spring. This story will help us learn our reading skills: Main Idea, Predictions, and our reading genre: Persuasive text.

This Week’s Sight Words- because, laugh, off, open, sentence

Phonics- We will be identifying the sound “Vowel Teams: ue/ew/ui” found in words and “Prefixes re-/un-” sounds found in words.

Grammar- We will be identifying what “Prepositions” are.

Listening- We will be starting our next author study, “Tomie dePaola.”

Writing- We will continue to focus on writing our letters correctly. We also will be continuing to learn about the “writing process.”

Religion- We will be learning about “Mary,” in honor of Mother’s Day.

Social Studies- We will be continuing to learn about famous people: Louis Braille and Thomas Jefferson.

Science- We will be continuing our next unit, “Light.”

Health- We will be classifying food according to healthy and non-healthy foods.

Reminders:
•On Friday, the students will be tested on their ten spelling words and sight words.

• The students will be having a Math Test on Topic 11 on Tuesday, May 4, 2021.
Please review the completed work that was sent home, which we have already learned (Homework and Class Work).

• The students will be having their Social Studies test on Thursday, May 6, 2021.
(review the paper that was sent home by email).

• The students will be having a Math Test on Topic 12 on Thursday, May 13, 2021.
Please review the completed work that was sent home, which we have already learned (Homework and Class Work).

• Our Specials Are: Monday- Gym; Tuesday- Technology; Wednesday- Spanish and Stream; Thursday-Music; Friday- Art.

Homework Assignments

Monday:
1. Math- Review Sheet and study for the test tomorrow. Please keep the “Review Sheet” at home for review.
2. Phonics- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Vowel Teams ue/ew/ui)
3. Spelling- Write spelling words (1-5) two times each.
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words.
5. Additional School Work: Read for 15 minutes and record it on your Reading Log AND work on “i-ready” for 15 minutes (ELA).

Tuesday:
1. Math- No Math Homework!
2. Phonics- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Vowel Teams ue/ew/ui)
3. Spelling- Write spelling words (6-10) two times each.
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words.
5. Additional School Work: Read for 15 minutes and record it on your Reading Log AND work on “i-ready” for 15 minutes (MATH).

Wednesday:
1. Math- Math Workbook 12-1
2. Phonics- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Prefixes re-/un-)
3. Spelling- Pick five spelling words, and write one sentence for each of the five words. (Continuing from now on, I would like the students to put the (5) spelling words in meaningful sentences. This will help the students develop better writing skills. For example: I see a giant bear at the zoo. Instead of I see a giant bear. )
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words.
5. Social Studies- Study for the test tomorrow.
6. Additional School Work: Read for 15 minutes and record it on your Reading Log AND work on “Freckle” for 15 minutes (ELA).

Thursday:
1. Math- Math Workbook 12-2
2. Grammar- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Prepositions)
3. Spelling- Practice the spelling words, for a test tomorrow.
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words, to be assessed tomorrow.
5. Additional School Work: Read for 15 minutes and record it on your Reading Log AND work on “Freckle” for 15 minutes (MATH).
