1st Grade Weekly Newsletter

Math- We will be reviewing/taking our test on Topic 3. Next, we will begin Topic 4- “Subtraction Facts To 20: Use Strategies.” We will use a number line to subtract by counting on or counting back and making subtraction easier by making 10 to subtract.

Reading- We will be continuing our reading series reading the story The Life Cycle of a Sunflower. This story will help us learn our reading skills: Main Idea, Facts/Details, Making Inferences, and our reading genre: Informational Text.
This Week’s Sight Words- jump, she, take, walk, what

Phonics- We will be identifying the ending sound “-ck” in words and recognizing the “final /s/ and /z/ spelling ss” in a words.

Grammar- We will be identifying what a “declarative sentence” is.

Listening- We will be reading “Thanksgiving” books.

Writing- We will be continuing to focus on writing our numbers and letters correctly. Also, we will be beginning to learn about the steps in the “Writing Process.”

Religion- We will be learning about Chapter 8- “Jesus Had Many Followers.”

Science- We will be learning about “amphibians and fish.”

Social Studies- We will be describing ways children help one another at school and learning the importance of group cooperation.

Reminders:
• This Friday, the students will be tested on their ten spelling words and sight words.

• The students will be having a Math test on “TOPIC 3” on Tuesday,
November 15, 2022. Please review the completed work that was sent home, which we have already learned (Homework and Class Work).

• The students will be having their first Social Studies Test next week on Tuesday,
November 22, 2022. (review the paper that was sent home).

• Our Specials Are: Monday- Spanish; Tuesday- Art; Wednesday- STREAM; Thursday- Mass and Music; Friday- Technology and Gym.

Homework Assignments

**Practice with your child to help them to continue to memorize their double facts.**
(1+1=2, 2+2=4, 3+3=6, 4+4=8, 5+5=10, 6+6=12, 7+7=14, 8+8=16, 9+9=18, 10+10=20)

** Please start practicing shoe-tying and zipping coats on their own, with your child. **

Tuesday:
1. Math- No Math Homework!
2. Phonics- Phonics Workbook Packet (1 Page- Plurals -s)
3. Spelling- Write spelling words (6-10) two times each.
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words.

Wednesday:
1. Math- Math Workbook Lesson 4-1
2. Phonics- Phonics Workbook Page (1 Page-Thanksgiving Rhyming Words)
3. Spelling- Pick five spelling words, and write a sentence for each of the five words. Please underline the spelling word in each sentence.
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words.

Thursday:
1. Math- Math Workbook Lesson 4-2
2. Grammar- Phonics Workbook Page (1 Page- Declarative Sentences)
3. Reading- Read “Decodable Reader- “The Stems”
4. Spelling- Study for the spelling test on Friday.
5. Sight Words- Practice the sight words, to be evaluated on Friday.
