1st Grade Weekly Newsletter

Math- We will be solving subtraction problems that involve comparing to find how many fewer objects are in one group than another group, solving addition problems by finding a missing addend, solving problems involving putting together or taking apart, and constructing math arguments in order to solve addition and subtraction problems.

Reading- We will be starting our reading series reading the story Henry On Wheels. This story will help us learn our reading skill: Setting and our reading genre: realistic fiction.
This Week’s Sight Words- do, like, one, the, we

Phonics- We will be continuing to review another set of letters along with their sounds, which are: “c, p, n” and “short vowel i”.

Handwriting- We will begin by reviewing vertical lines, forward/backward circle lines, and how to make slant lines. This will help the students in making correct letter formation.

Grammar- We will be discovering what a “verb” is.

Listening- We will be continuing our first “Author Study” by Miriam Cohen.

Religion- We will be learning about Chapter 2- “We Believe in the Blessed Trinity.”

Science- We will be learning about the parts of an apple.

Social Studies- We will be learning about who “Johnny Appleseed” was and why he is famous.

Health- We will be identifying what our five senses are.

Reminders:
• This Friday, the students will be tested on their six spelling words and sight words.

• The students will be having a Math test “TOPIC 1- Solving Addition and Subtraction Problems to 10” on Tuesday, October 4, 2022. Please review the completed work that was sent home, which we have already learned (Homework and Class Work).

• Our Specials Are: Monday- Spanish; Tuesday- Art; Wednesday- STREAM; Thursday- Mass and Music; Friday- Technology and Gym.

3. Spelling- Practice the spelling words, for a test tomorrow.
4. Sight Words- Practice the sight words, to be assessed tomorrow.
